Stories from the Mahabharata – Parts I–III A Sanskrit Course Books
Stories from the Mahabharata – Parts I–III is an engaging Sanskrit coursebook series designed for intermediate-level students. Using selected stories from the great Indian epic Mahabharata, the series develops Sanskrit language skills through a carefully graded combination of reading, grammar, vocabulary, writing, oral practice, and listening exercises.
Sanskrit offers students a systematic approach to language learning while providing an introduction to India's rich classical literary and cultural heritage. This course uses the fascinating stories of the Mahabharata to make the study of Sanskrit meaningful and enjoyable.
The series gradually develops students' knowledge of Sanskrit grammar through the stories, allowing learners to strengthen their understanding while reading authentic-style Sanskrit passages. Fluent reading and writing of the Devanagari script is essential at this stage.
The course also places strong emphasis on oral and listening practice. Students are encouraged to read stories aloud, answer questions in Sanskrit, participate in language games and competitions, and practise grammatical paradigms through traditional recitation. Regular oral and written testing helps students learn case endings and grammatical forms accurately.
It is recommended that students complete the preceding Story of Rama Parts I, II and III before beginning Stories from the Mahabharata. This provides the necessary foundation for progressing to the intermediate level.
