Jewels of the Heart By Prabhupad Srila Premgopal Goswami
The Gaudiya Vaishnavas practise bhakti internally by remembering the transcendental pastimes of Sri Radha-Krishna or Sri Nitai-Gauranga and externally by hearing and chanting about these pastimes. Thus, at the end of life, they may be able to enter into the Lord's eternal pastimes. This is the highest perfection of life.
We all aspire to keep Sri Radha-Krishna in our heart. We want the Divine Couple to be the jewels decorating our heart, not anything else. However, in our conditioned state, our heart is impure and full of selfish material desires and unwanted habits. Therefore, it is not a suitable place for Srimati Radhika and Her beloved Krishna to reside. But by the process of bhakti we can purify our heart. By chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra in the association of saintly devotees, by hearing harikatha, and by devotional service, our hearts gradually become purified. This must be done under the guidance of a genuine Guru, a pure devotee. Without receiving proper initiation with diksha mantras from Sri Guru, purification of the heart will never happen. It is our connection with him that gives us the connection and establishes our relationship with the Divine Couple.
Besides sadhu-sanga and Krishna-nama – nothing else is essential in this world. My sole desire, therefore, is to chant Sri Krishna-nama in the association of sadhus (saintly Vaishnavas). There is no other auspicious practice whereby one can become free from the cycle of samsara, the repetition of birth and death.
Sadhu-sanga, nama-kirtana, bhagavata-sravana, Mathura-vasa, Sri-murtira sraddhaya sevana – these are the five essential limbs of bhakti.
If we follow the instructions of Sri Guru and shastra sincerely, then our heart will be purified of all material contamination. It will become pure, clean, fragrant, and soft—suitable for welcoming the Divine Couple. We have to transform our heart into a kunja and decorate it with the flower petals of our devotion before Sri Radha and Krishna will be attracted to perform Their divine pastimes there.
How do we reach that elevated state of consciousness? Only by Sri Guru’s grace. By the causeless mercy of Sri Gurudeva, he takes us from here to there. He can do this because he is a perfected soul, and his heart is already like a kunja. Prabhupad Srila Premgopal Goswami is such a genuine guru, and the Divine Couple are the jewels of his heart.
In the eighth verse of Sri Radha-rasa-sudha-nidhi, Srimati Radhika is glorified as rasa-nidhi, an ocean of rasa. Radhika makes Her lover, Sri Krishna, happy by immersing Him in the waves of Her wonderful, sweet, amorous rasa. But if rasa is taken to mean Sri Krishna, who is rasa personified, another meaning manifests: Sri Radha is the jewel in Krishna's heart. She is also the jewel in the heart of Sri Gurudeva, who, in his eternal form as a manjari in the nikuñja lila of Vraja, serves Her intimately.
By his blessings and causeless mercy, we can also one day realize that Srimati Radharani is our eternal object of love and affection—the jewel in our heart. But first, we must take Sri Gurudeva into our heart. We must take shelter of his lotus feet, follow his instructions without duplicity, render service faithfully, and accept him as our life and soul. We must make him the jewel of our heart. Then, by sincerely practicing bhakti under his guidance, our heart will gradually be purified, and we will attain the desire for manjari-bhava.
