Sri Caitanya-carita Mahakavya Srila Murari Gupta
This profound work, compiled by Srila Murari Gupta soon after Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s disappearance, stands as one of the earliest and most authentic biographical accounts of the Lord’s divine life. It was personally read and highly appreciated by Lord Caitanya’s intimate associates, including Sri Advaita Acarya and Srivasa Thakura.
As Srila Prabhupada notes in his purports to the Sri Caitanya-caritamrta:
> “By this time, contemporary and near-contemporary scholars and devotees had already written several biographical works on the life of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. These included Sri Caitanya-carita by Murari Gupta, Caitanya-mangala by Locana dasa Thakura, and Caitanya-bhagavata. The later biographers drew heavily from the notebooks of Murari Gupta, confirming the accuracy and reliability of his accounts.”
Srila Prabhupada further mentions in Srimad-Bhagavatam purports:
> “The Lord’s early life was recorded by one of His chief devotees and contemporaries, namely Srila Murari Gupta, a physician by profession. The later part of Mahaprabhu’s life was recorded by His personal secretary, Srila Svarupa Damodara Gosvami. These two devotees chronicled nearly all the events of the Lord’s pastimes, and subsequent biographies were based upon their Kadacas (notebooks).”
Murari Gupta, one of Mahaprabhu’s most intimate Navadvipa associates, is glorified in the Caitanya-caritamrta:
> “Murari Gupta, the twenty-first branch of the tree of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, was a storehouse of love of Godhead. His humility and meekness melted the heart of Lord Caitanya.”
Thus, Sri Caitanya-carita Mahakavya is not merely a biography, but a deeply devotional record from an eyewitness associate, offering rare insights into the early pastimes of Lord Caitanya.
